3 July 2025 – Thame, UK

As part of our ongoing commitment to community and environmental responsibility, a team of Lucy Electric volunteers took part in a wildlife habitat workshop on 2 July 2025, helping to build homes for local hedgehogs in collaboration with 21st Century Thame.

The event, held at The White House on Aston Hill near Chinnor, brought together volunteers from Lucy Electric and other local businesses in a shared effort to support wildlife conservation. The morning was spent constructing hedgehog houses designed to provide safe shelter for these endangered creatures.

Monika Sonar, Central Digital Marketing Manager, said:
“It was a fantastic experience – hands-on, rewarding, and a great way to give something back to our local environment,” said one participant. “And we even got to meet others in the community who share the same passion for wildlife.”

The session was led by an experienced team from 21st Century Thame, who provided guidance and support throughout. Volunteers left not only with a sense of achievement, but also with new skills and a deeper understanding of how small actions can make a real difference to local biodiversity.

December 2024: We are proud to announce that Lucy Electric has won Utility Partner of the Year at the prestigious 2024 Utility Week Awards for our ongoing collaboration with UKPN on developing the UK’s first non-SF6 Ring Main Unit (RMU), Sabre EcoTec. The RMU does not utilise the greenhouse gas SF6 for insulation, thereby decarbonising crucial network infrastructure and parts of the supply chain.

The award highlights the importance of collaboration and long-term partnership in delivering outstanding essential services for today and tomorrow. This industry recognition is a testament to our talented team who have worked tirelessly to deliver the UK’s first RMU that meets DNO specifications, well ahead of an anticipated SF6 ban.

This achievement reflects four years of dedicated development and close collaboration with our DNO partner. We listened extensively to customer feedback to optimise the design, such as embedding the control unit and the smart solutions and including remote controls available as standard. This means that substations do not need to be redesigned to fit EcoTec, enabling an easy transition.

Since 2020, we have been investing in the development of Sabre EcoTec and we’re already starting to see the results. EcoTec is making a significant impact, helping grid operators achieve Net Zero by saving the equivalent of more than 33 tonnes of CO2 per unit.

Through our ongoing efforts, we ensure that our utility partners are equipped to adapt to future regulatory changes, contributing not only to their Net Zero goals but also to those of wider society.

Key collaboration partner, UK Power Networks said:

“UK Power Networks looks to build strong supply chain partnerships that enable us to deliver the best infrastructure solutions for our customer’s needs, as cost effectively as possible. Lucy Electric has been such a great partner for over 100 years and this latest innovation is incredibly exciting. The development and launching of EcoTec, as the first synthetic air RMU in the UK, is an essential component of our efforts to decarbonise operations and reach our Net Zero ambitious.”

Powering the transition to sustainable energy networks

With the widespread use of RMUs and the projected expansion of the electricity networks, a UK wide implementation of EcoTec has the potential to save millions of tonnes of CO2.

Given the increasing requirement for package substations to support the UK’s push towards decarbonisation, including meeting public EV charging needs and growing renewable development, Sabre EcoTec will play a critical role in feeding energy to our streets and houses.

Looking ahead to 2025, we remain dedicated to strengthening our partnerships and driving innovation. Together, we will continue to support our utility partners in their mission to achieve a green grid by 2030.

Empowering Education: Lucy Electric India’s Impact on Sukhdev Primary Aashram School

Education is the foundation of progress, and supporting local schools plays a vital role in nurturing the future generations. Sukhdev Primary Aashram School in Ambad, Nashik, has been fortunate to receive substantial support from Lucy Electric, India. Over the past few months, Lucy Electric has been instrumental in providing vital resources to the school, with a strong focus on promoting excellence in handwriting among its students.

The partnership between Lucy Electric India and Sukhdev Primary Aashram School started with a notebook distribution program, followed by assemblies, prize-giving events and visits from staff at Lucy Electric, India.

Lucy Electric India has consistently distributed notebooks and other learning materials to all the students and has shown unwavering dedication to motivating them in their learning and development journey.

To elevate this initiative, Lucy Electric India organized a handwriting improvement program. During this program, students were encouraged to showcase their handwriting abilities, and a select group of talented students with exemplary penmanship were given prizes by members of LEI.

The handwriting improvement program entails regular sessions held within the school premises. Committed representatives from Lucy Electric India visited the school twice a week to work closely with the students on enhancing their handwriting skills. Through these engaging sessions, the students received personalized guidance, constructive feedback, and encouragement which significantly contributed to enhancing their handwriting.

As the weeks unfolded, a visible transformation was observed in the students’ attitudes towards handwriting. Those who were once shy and hesitant to display their skills now willingly embraced the improvement program, eager to develop themselves. The enthusiasm and keen interest by the students underscore the profound impact of a little encouragement and reaffirms that everyone possesses the potential to improve their writing skills with dedication and practice.

The partnership with the school continues to flourish as staff members from Lucy Electric India are frequently invited to engage with the children, inspiring them to embrace their learning journey. We take pride in being part of this initiative and in our ability to support the education of young minds.

Periodic testing of the safety of both public and private electrical networks is not only a legal requirement but essential for safe operation. The private electrical network of National Highways is no exemption, with manual testing of lighting columns along roads taking place every six years as the current standard. Manual delivery of such tests however is not only expensive but also poses several challenges for both engineers and highway users, including lane or entire road closures to enable safe access.

The British Standard Requirements for Electrical Installations (BS7671:2018) section 652.2 allows for “an adequate regime of continuous monitoring” to replace manual testing. A recent partnership has proven how technology has enabled the automation of data gathering and analysis to reduce the cost, resource and disruption of lighting maintenance.

Led by National Highways and working with Kier Highways and Lucy Electric, the team embarked on the joint ‘GridKey Cablesmart’ project to explore this continuous monitoring option. The aim was to replace the need for manual testing by fitting measurement devices in feeder pillars and lighting columns, to transmit data 24/7 for analytics, generating test certificates or triggering alarms as necessary. The pilot project focuses on Highways Area 9 lighting circuits, where the GridKey measurement units (MCU) were fitted in each of the pillars together with the newly developed AutoLoop units being installed in the last column of each circuit. These provide a range of real-time electrical measurement data for each of the circuits, including Zs measurements to test the integrity of the earthing and detecting current spikes indicative of cable or column fault. Information is then analysed and displayed at the central Data Centre with a bespoke portal and with further insight also available through auto-generated daily safety certificates.

Based on the first six months’ data, real-time information from automated monitoring has already proven valuable, allowing significantly faster reaction time to support early intervention, and also eliminating the need for Traffic Management for each test. Rather than waiting for the next six years’ manual test, the technology effectively carries out a check every 24 hours, which has helped identify safety concerns on up to ten percent of circuits, enabling remedial work to address them before they become urgent. Real-time information further eases the maintenance work by identifying the exact nature of faults and allowing the monitoring of results following the remedial work.

Initial results are extremely encouraging both in terms of technical and commercial viability. Based on a national roll-out of the technology and extrapolated from analysis of the current test time on sections of the M6 and the M5 motorways, approximately 500,000 man-hours of time on the road network would be saved each year, adding up to a total of estimated annual savings of £4million and a payback for the system installation of less than a year. Beyond immediate financial benefits, the potential of the Cablesmart system is expected to be far wider reaching, with possible long-term forecasts of circuit failures up to five years ahead; in addition to the opportunity to expand to further applications, such as Highways England’s technology circuits.

GridKey MCU installed in feeder pillar

Autoloop installed in lighting column

Example of a unit showing intermittent “Amber” alerts

Another Zs trace – interesting in that depending on when you tested it, on some days it would be good, some it would be amber, and some red. Makes the point of why this is preferable to manual testing.

After the success of the John Hampden school Bug Hotel project, news of Lucy Electric Thames expertise in Bug Hotel building has spread far and wide. The site was approached by another local primary school, Barley Hill, to ask if they could also have a bug hotel for their forest school. The site was more than happy to oblige pre-building a frame on the shop floor and soldering a plaque specially for the day. Five volunteers from Lucy Electric went to the school to help which were also joined by four children who are part of the schools environmental group. The children were delighted to be allowed out of class to help fill up the bug hotel with straw and bamboo to ensure that when the bugs move in, they would be really snug!

The day provided a fantastic learning opportunity engaging the children in physical activities whilst also learning about the importance of biodiversity for the environment from their teacher. A few facts they learned included that insects form a key base in the food web, feeding birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians and mammals. Called 6 legged lifesavers by some, insects not only provide food, but they also keep harmful organisms in check. A ladybug may eat as many as a thousand aphids during its larval development, plus several hundred more while it’s an adult and is producing its eggs.

This small project was great fun for our Lucy Electric team who were delighted to see the enthusiasm of the children and enjoyed supporting the school and local environment.

Overview

Utility networks face new challenges as part of their responsibility to support sustainable, secure and affordable energy. The era of building and managing infrastructure has been replaced with an evolution that sees a need to monitor in real time, to predict load more precisely and to adapt to the rapidly changing demand of EVs and renewables. Our AcuTec range, alongside all Lucy Electric solutions, has been designed to facilitate the decarbonisation, decentralisation, digitalisation and democratisation of energy systems.

Providing flexibility in a compact space is key to futureproofing the electrical infrastructure of a development for the growth in decentralised, low-carbon energy generation and supply.

In developing the AcuTec product we had to ensure it would:

  • Be LV Monitoring compatible on outgoing feeders
  • Accommodate all existing aftermarket fault reclosing devices
  • Have class leading cabling space especially for 300mm2 4C waveform cables
  • Have ‘standard’ size fuse handles to give greater flexibility in positioning the disconnectors and generator sockets

How we can help

We have created a cabinet which meets or exceeds all parameters and requirements to give the greatest adaptability for network operators. In addition to all the ‘must haves’ it has a number of features which go beyond specification as well as its compatibility with our industry-leading LV monitoring, Gridkey, or as part of our package substation solutions.

Meeting your challenges

AcuTec has been designed to comply with ENA TS 37-2 / BS EN 61439, is compatible with the transformer standard Type ‘F’ flange, and is currently undergoing formal, final assessment and approval by the Energy Networks Association panel.

Available in 800A and 1600A versions, it also incorporates class leading 500mm plus Neutral core length for 4 core cabling, and its fuse way allows fitment of third party fault re-energising devices.

It is engineer-friendly, designed with fitters in mind by having more space for cabling than any other cabinet available. It is also future proofed to meet the growing demand for home electric vehicle (EV) charging points.

This is the LV fuse cabinet of the future – available today.
